Sketch with Sanity

  1. Use the papers with resolution markers on it instead of plain white paper. If you are designing for an app of 1260 max. resolution; use the paper which has indicators marked for pixels.
  2. Using grid paper or dotted paper will make it easier to draw straight lines.
  3. Use stencils to make the sketch look more realistic and detailed.
  4. Do not just draw boxes, add details to your sketch as iterate your design.
  5. Use sticky notes to show slide out windows and dropdowns.
  6. Use actual titles in the sketch instead of scribbling.
  7. Use grey highlighters to show disabled effect.
  8. Sketch in layers using grey highlighters.
  9. Use colored pens and markers to make your sketch look more finished.
  10. Use different colors to show different kinds of interaction on a screen.
  11. Try to cover as many interactions as possible onto one sketch and then annotate them thoroughly.
  12. If on a sticky note there is lot of extra space, rip off that extra space to make your sketch look cleaner.
  13. If longer page is needed to explain an interaction for a long screen, attach an extra half or 1/4 page at the bottom of the page.
  14. Do not use lot of erasers, instead re-sketch. Every time you sketch, more design juices will flow into your brain.
  15. Use call out shaped sticky notes for call outs on sketch.
  16. Add lots of callouts to explain the behavior envisioned.
  17. Document your sketches. Have screen name, date, version number, people involved in the design, people involved in the review.
